Protecting Wildlife, Giving Smarter: Your Tax-Savvy Summer Guide

Summer is a vibrant, active season here at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. From monitoring new arrivals in our breeding programs to managing hundreds of acres of open pasture for endangered and threatened species, our team works year-round to ensure a future for animals that need our help most.

That work depends on the generosity of nature lovers like you – and we want to make sure your generosity goes as far as possible. As you review your mid-year finances, it’s a great time to look beyond traditional cash or credit card donations. Three tax-efficient giving options can stretch your philanthropic dollars further while keeping endangered species at the center of every decision.

Gifts of Stock
When you donate appreciated securities directly to Fossil Rim, you bypass capital gains tax on the appreciation entirely — while still claiming a charitable deduction for the full fair market value. More of your investment goes where it belongs: supporting the animals in our care.

IRA Gifts
If you’re 70½ or older, a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA is excluded from your taxable income and may satisfy your Required Minimum Distribution for the year. It’s a powerful way to put retirement savings to work for species like the southern white rhino and black-footed cat — animals whose survival depends on sustained, long-term commitment.

Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)
Already set funds aside for charitable giving? Recommending a grant to Fossil Rim through your DAF is seamless and tax-free — a direct line from your philanthropic intent to conservation on the ground.

With the help of our partners at FreeWill, we’ve built a secure, easy-to-use platform where you can explore each of these options in more detail. However you choose to give, your support helps ensure Fossil Rim remains a refuge for the world’s most vulnerable wildlife — and a model for what conservation can look like when a community truly shows up.
