Fossil Rim Welcomes Two New Black-Footed Cat Kittens

On April 15, our female black-footed cat (BFC) Adana (first-time mother born here at Fossil Rim) gave birth to two healthy and feisty girls. With very few individuals remaining in zoos across the U.S., this birth is vital for the BFC population, and now brings our resident count to nine!

Beyond the care of our current BFC residents, Fossil Rim has been a leader in conservation and breeding for BFCs in North America since former Executive Director Dr. Patrick Condy made the decision to bring the species here in 2014. In the years following that introduction, we have been able to massively contribute to global conservation efforts, celebrating the births of 18 surviving kittens and becoming home to the three oldest BFCs currently in human care. Among them is Naia, the oldest BFC on record at 19 years old.

This incredible track record establishes us as a premier breeding facility for the species and reflects the importance of strong animal care practices – including veterinary support, good nutrition, and enrichment – as a proud, long-term contributing member of the Black-Footed Cat Consortium.

Thanks to the support of our donors, guests, and our amazing carnivore team, we are able to ensure the survival and well-being of the vulnerable and elusive black-footed cat. During your next visit, be sure to stop by Animal Discoveries – an interactive, educational stop along Fossil Rim’s scenic drive – and try to say hi to Naia!
