World Nature Conservation Day

Did you know July 28 is World Nature Conservation Day? It's a day to recognize the importance of protecting wildlife and preserving the natural world for generations to come. That's a mission we live every day right here in Glen Rose at Fossil Rim.

For more than 42 years, Fossil Rim has been dedicated to the propagation and preservation of threatened and endangered species. While there's a lot of science behind that work, it also means one of our favorite moments: welcoming new babies into the world.

But conservation is about much more than births. Our cheetah breeding program is among the most successful in North America, and our Attwater's Prairie Chicken Recovery Program plays a vital role in restoring one of the continent's most endangered bird species. Closer to home, we've celebrated the births of American red wolves and Mexican wolves, and in 2024 launched our Texas Horned Lizard Program to join the collaborative conservation efforts of zoos and state agencies working to protect one of Texas' most iconic native reptiles.

Our commitment doesn't stop with wildlife care. For more than 20 years, Fossil Rim has conducted scientific research that advances conservation efforts both here in Texas and around the world. Our Environmental Engagement department furthers this mission as well, offering programming and opportunities that help individuals discover their role, and fulfill their responsibilities, within the natural world.

Every visit to Fossil Rim helps make this work possible. As a nonprofit conservation center, guest visits and donor support fuel exceptional animal care, groundbreaking conservation programs, scientific research, and meaningful environmental education.

Because the future we strive to create is one where wildlife, wild places, and people thrive together.

Conservation begins with action, and none of this work happens without partners like you. Whether you visit, become a member, volunteer, or make your first gift, every act of support helps create a better future for wildlife. This World Nature Conservation Day, consider making a gift to Fossil Rim. Your donation directly fuels the animal care, research and conservation programs that protect these species for generations to come.
