The wait is finally over. We wanted to give our staff the opportunity to name our two newest giraffes, so we held a drawing, and we couldn't be happier with the results!
First-time mom Betty Jane welcomed Paisley, the older of the two calves, back on May 13th. Animal Care Specialist Karlen chose the name simply because she loved it, but it turned out to fit her better than expected. Paisley has four unique clover-like markings right on her chest, making her sweet, floral name a perfect fit.

The younger of the two, Pretzel, was named by Environmental Engagement Specialist Anna, and her name couldn't be more fitting. Anna chose "Pretzel" because of the way giraffes rest: when a giraffe lies down and tucks her head back against her hindquarters, she looks just like a little folded pretzel. Beyond her adorable resting posture, Pretzel has a few unique markings that make her easy to spot in the pasture. Her light coat features a distinctive pattern - almost every spot has tiny internal dots resembling salt on a pretzel, plus an arrow-shaped marking on her shoulder.

As you may have seen on social media, these two have become completely inseparable and spend almost all their time together. Be sure to keep an eye out for their unique patterns when you visit to tell them apart. While they aren’t quite bold enough to hand-feed just yet, we know they'll gain more confidence as they grow.
