Sometimes, an event manages to benefit everyone involved.
Such is the case with Somervell County Day, set for Saturday, Dec. 5 at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. It has become a tradition that now falls one day after Fossil Rim’s Dream Day event.
“If you live or work in Somervell County, just bring an item that somehow verifies either residence or employment along with two nonperishable food items per person,” said Warren Lewis, Fossil Rim marketing director. “You’ll be granted free access to the park that day so you can take the Scenic Wildlife Drive.”
At day’s end, the food collected is loaded onto a truck and taken directly to Somervell County Food Bank. In the spirit of Christmas, there’s a prevailing theme of generosity.
“We get support from the people of Somervell County in a lot of different ways, such as people donating to us, referring others to visit or even volunteering,” Lewis said. “This is a way to show our appreciation.”
A holiday photo op will be on the table, as Santa and his elf will be on hand at the Admission Office. Mrs. Claus might even make an appearance.
A couple of cans of soup for someone who needs it paving the way to handfeed a giraffe for free, what could be better?
