FRED Talk: National Bird Day

This day is celebrating birds! We will talk about Fossil Rim bird species and some of the birds native to this area of Texas. Birds are important to their environment – come to Fossil Rim to find out why! This free event is located at the Overlook.

Birds & Birding

Homeschool Class + Modified Tour: Join us for fun in the classroom, as we learn about feathers, flight, bird families, bird behaviors and much more! Then, we’ll head into the field for birding: finding and identifying some of the 200-plus bird species amongst our 1,800 acres. We’ll also have close encounters with some exotic bird species. Rhino Encounter Program

Wolves

Homeschool Class + Behind-the-Scenes Tour: The relationship between man and wolf has been a rocky one, and you will learn how that interaction has evolved over the years. Fossil Rim has Mexican gray wolves, red wolves and maned wolves. Discover the habits and history of these amazing animals and enjoy the unique opportunity of viewing our resident wolves – possibly all species! This event is for homeschoolers ages seven and up. FRED Talk: National Serpent Day

This is a special day dedicated to those slithery creatures that many people love to hate. However, snakes are a vital part of the ecosystem and are not nearly as scary as people tend to think. Come to Fossil Rim to learn more about these important animals, and maybe even conquer your fear by touching a snake! This free event is located at the Overlook.

Sweetheart Safari Dinner And Tour

Impress your sweetheart with a romantic dinner and evening wildlife tour. You and your sweetheart arrive at the Foothills Safari Camp at 4 p.m. for a complimentary glass of wine or champagne. The Lorax

Homeschool Class + Tour: “UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not!” Discover this powerful message of natural resource conservation found in a favorite children’s book written by Dr. Seuss. In this program, students will have the opportunity to visit the Street of the Lifted Lorax and become a part of the story.
This integrative program connects the story of the Lorax to an endangered Texas native, the Attwater’s prairie chicken, for which Fossil Rim has an onsite breeding program. Master Composter Training

Workshop: This three-day course, which is hosted by Fossil Rim inside the Activities Center at our Overlook area, will provide you with an in-depth look at composting. Learn the biology of composting, the importance of solid-waste reduction and hands-on bin building. State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (STAR) course certification is obtained after completing volunteer service hours. On Saturday, lunch will be provided and three composting books are included, as well as a compost thermometer. Call (254) 897-2960 for registration. $35 per person or $55 for two people.

Family Hike + Tour

Homeschool Class + Tour: At Fossil Rim, we emphasize understanding and valuing biodiversity; and biodiversity is packaged in biomes. If the world is a town, then biomes are the neighborhoods. Discover what biomes are, what they share in common and what makes each biome unique.

The Photo Tour lets the photographer catch the dusk light, which is the best light possible for afternoon photos. The tours will go through Fossil Rim’s 1,800 acres of pastures. There are 50-plus species of animals at Fossil Rim.
Some of the animals that may be photographed include white rhinos, blackbuck, European red deer, gemsbok, zebras, addax, waterbuck, giraffes, sable, axis deer and dama gazelle, just to name a few. FRED Talks: Vultures / Pollinators / Upcycling

Throughout Spring Break (through March 18), we have a trio of free FRED Talks going on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is “Keep Calm and Carrion” outside the Admission Center about vultures. Outside the tours office at the Overlook, there is “Bee the Change” about pollinators. Also at the Overlook outside the Children’s Animal Center, there is a presentation about upcycling. Feel free to take your children to all three of these talks during your visit, since there is no such thing as too much learning at Fossil Rim!

Robin Hood Day Camp

Day Camp: Come join our merry band for a day of discovery and adventure! Take up a bow and notch an arrow! Discovery the forest habitat and learn some skills you need to camp in it! Explore the forest, learning about “The King’s Deer” (European red deer) and whitetail deer, as well as camouflage and poaching. Use your camouflage to escape the not-so-sheriff-like Sheriff of Nottingham! To register, call (254) 897-2960. $32 per person.

Here’s how it works: Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose will have stations set up at different locations around our park with activities for the Girl Scouts. You will complete the activities, get your card stamped and earn your badges - it’s that simple! The activities will include a guided tour of the park, eco-games, arts and crafts and a nature hike.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. The cost includes all activities and a Badge Fest 2018 patch. The badges earned will be Bugs and Senses (badges not provided). Come enjoy the evening beauty of Fossil Rim. We’ll start with an interactive learning experience where you can discover nocturnal animal adaptations and how animals utilize the night sky. Then, using spotlights, we’ll go on a guided after-dark adventure that will feature both the exotic and native nocturnal wildlife at Fossil Rim and allow you to sit back, relax and enjoy the night.

Attwater's Prairie Chickens

Homeschool Class + Behind-the-Scenes Tour: In 1900, there were about one million Attwater’s prairie chickens on the coastal prairie of Texas and Louisiana. Today, in the wild, there are less than 50. Fossil Rim has a special relationship with these endangered and beautiful grouse. Come see our captive population, where and how they are raised, and meet some of the special people who are working hard to save them. For ages 7 and up. Homeschool Class + Tour: Fossil Rim used to be underwater! A lot of sea creatures left an abundance of interesting evidence that they used to live here. That evidence is found in our rocks. Animal Care Specialist Tour And Dinner

The excursion will take you through Fossil Rim where you’ll have a chance to view our exotic animals in their free-roaming environment. You’ll go into our Intensive Management Area (IMA) and visit our maned wolves, Mexican gray wolves, cheetahs, red wolves, black rhinos, black-footed cats, and Attwater’s prairie chickens. Let dad relax this Father's Day with an afternoon at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center! Dad and his guests will enjoy a barbecue buffet in our glass-walled pavilion at Foothills Safari Camp, which overlooks a scenic wildlife watering hole in our Main Pasture. Guests can sit and relax on the outdoor decks or challenge dad to a game of volleyball, horseshoes, cornhole (bean bag toss), or just bring a ball to play catch. Dad and his guests will receive one complimentary pass so their vehicle can take the 7.2-mile Gosdin Scenic Drive through our 1,800-acre park. Homeschool Class + Behind-the-Scenes Tour: The relationship between man and wolf has been a rocky one, and you will learn how that interaction has evolved over the years. Animal Care Specialist Tour And Dinner

Join us for this exclusive tour and dinner. Ride along with our expert animal care specialist on this behind-the-scenes tour. The excursion will take you through Fossil Rim where you’ll have a chance to view our exotic animals in their free-roaming environment. You’ll go into our Intensive Management Area (IMA) and visit our maned wolves, Mexican gray wolves, cheetahs, red wolves, black rhinos, black-footed cats, and Attwater’s prairie chickens. After your tour, you’ll head to our Foothills Safari Camp to enjoy a multi-course dinner, dessert and complimentary glass of wine in our glass-walled pavilion that overlooks a scenic watering hole in our Main Pasture. FRED Talk: World Rhino Day

Fossil Rim's education department will host a World Rhino Day version of our free FRED Talks at the Front Gate. We plan to have a rhino crate, black rhino boot and a white rhino skull to show our guests. We will have informational displays about the five types of rhinos. There will also be four interactive activities: painting your name on our wooden rhino, color an emery board to keep that will remind you rhino horn is made from the same protein as our fingernails, color and keep an informational rhino bookmark, plus either take home a 2018 World Rhino Day button or draw your own rhino to create a button. Fossil Rim volunteers will give special tours focusing on our white rhino yard, which will cost $10 per person with the funds going toward the care of our Fossil Rim rhinos.

Family Fossil Dig

Are there any aspiring paleontologists (fossil hunters) in your family? Have you ever wondered why we’re called Fossil Rim Wildlife Center? After a brief introduction to fossils so that you will know what you’re looking for, we’ll load into one of our tour vehicles and drive to one of our fossil pits and dig in! You’ll be able to keep at least a couple of the fossils you find. The day includes a full two-hour guided tour of the park. All ages are welcome for this activity, which meets at the EcoCenter. There’s a 10 percent discount for members. You are welcome to bring excavation tools, such as child-size shovels and picks, as well as buckets and brushes. Sweetest Day Safari Dinner And Tour

Impress your sweetheart with a romantic dinner and evening wildlife tour. You and your sweetheart arrive at the Foothills Safari Camp at 4 p.m. for a complimentary glass of wine or champagne. You will depart on your sunset safari tour at 4:30 p.m. in one of our open-air vehicles. CAC Spooktacular Halloween Extravaganza

Join our animals at the Children’s Animal Center (CAC) for some Halloween fun! It will include goats doing tricks for treats, a Jack-o’-lantern contest, a chance to meet some creepy crawlers, face painting and more. The Lorax

Homeschool Class + Tour: “UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not!” Discover this powerful message of natural resource conservation found in a favorite children’s book written by Dr. Seuss. In this program, students will have the opportunity to visit the Street of the Lifted Lorax and become a part of the story.
This integrative program connects the story of the Lorax to an endangered Texas native, the Attwater’s prairie chicken, for which Fossil Rim has an onsite breeding program.
