Outreach: Rim on the Road

If you cannot come to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, then we will come to you. Our outreach program, Rim on the Road, has several programs available and can teach everyone how to become good stewards of the earth.

Think Before You Squish

Insects and other arthropods are usually not found on a person’s list of favorite animals. But these underappreciated creepy crawlies are extremely valuable – not only to humans, but also to other plants and animals. In this program, students will use songs, games and real specimens as they discover the characteristics of insects and the important roles they play in the world around us. (Recommended for all ages.)

Don't Take Rocks For Granted!

All things made by people consist of one of three things: plants, animals or rocks.  Most people visit Fossil Rim to enjoy the living things, but nonliving things – such as rocks – are an important part of the ecosystem, too.  In our rocks and minerals program, we will first establish a foundation by partaking in an interactive rock-cycle game. Then, students will have the opportunity to examine several samples of rocks and minerals for themselves, while hypothesizing and discovering the many uses for these rocks and minerals in our world today. (Recommended for ages nine and older.)

Shop ‘Til You Drop

This program is for anyone who loves to shop!  Whether you are shopping for your favorite clothes, foods or household items – everything we use has an effect on the world around us. In this program, students will discover how our shopping choices impact the environment and what actions we can take to promote the conservation of natural resources.  (Recommended for ages nine and older.)

World Biomes

Do dolphins live in the desert? Do addax live in the rainforest? Every biome has a specific level of moisture and temperature, which makes it suitable for a specific plant or animal based on its adaptations. This specificity illustrates the delicate and interconnected nature of the world we live in. In this program, students will use our giant maps to explore the biomes of the world and the plants and animals that call those biomes home. (Recommended for ages nine and older.)

Behave Yourself

What does it mean when an opossum plays dead or when a dog bares its teeth? Animals use different types of behaviors to communicate with one another. Learn about the importance of behaviors in animal communication and even try some out for yourself. (Recommended for all ages.)

Biofact Bonanza

What’s the difference between horns and antlers? What can an animal’s teeth tell us about its diet? Why do some animals have claws and others have hooves? This program answers these questions and more while allowing students to discover the answers by examining animal biofacts from many of the creatures that we have right here at Fossil Rim. Discover the difference! (Recommended for all ages.).

What are the threats and challenges that animals face today? This program focuses on endangered species and the reasons they are threatened with extinction. Find out what our most beloved species are up against and how you can make a difference for both them and the environment. (Recommended for all ages.)

You’ll learn a lot about animal defense mechanisms, plus have fun creating your own animal and its defenses! (Recommended for all ages.)

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

Discover this powerful message of sustainability found in a favorite children’s book written by Dr. Seuss. In this program, students will have the opportunity to visit the Street of the Lifted Lorax and become a part of the story. This interactive program connects the story of The Lorax to our own endangered species at Fossil Rim and is guaranteed to leave students asking pertinent questions concerning the environment, sustainability and what they can do to help. Seasonal and space restrictions may apply. (Recommended for all ages.)

Have You Heard?

Have you heard: eating carrots increases your vision, gigantic snakes in the Amazon hang from trees and eat humans and rhino horn is a magical cure for cancer! In our Fossil Rim Fact or Fiction program you will discover how myths are created, why they are established and how they can affect us in our everyday lives. Stop the rumors before they start by uncovering the truth in this program. (Recommended for ages nine and older.)
