FAMILY ORIENTED TOURS

Join us on a guided tour that focuses on the family

Let us take you on a leisurely guided tour along the Scenic Wildlife Drive, as you meet some of your favorite animals. Thrill at the sight of the giraffe’s long neck bending over you. Squeal with excitement as our ostriches investigate you. Enliven your morning, afternoon or evening while being introduced to our kudu, cheetah, addax and other exotic residents.

On the Behind-the-Scenes and Ride-the-Rim tours, you can journey to parts of the park not visited on the Scenic Wildlife Drive. Enjoy the opportunity to discover our onsite research and to examine what you can do to make a difference in our world. These tours provide a truly educational experience you won’t soon forget.

Safari Tour

Recommended for all ages, this tour takes you on our Scenic Wildlife Drive. This is a perfect opportunity to get to know most of our animals and the stories surrounding both them and Fossil Rim. This tour lasts around two hours depending on weather, traffic in the park and if the animals decide they are especially hungry that day.

Times: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. on Monday - Friday. On Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays, all of those times will be available, plus 3 p.m. during Holidays and on some Weekends.

Price: $39.95 per person

(Make your tour private by paying an extra $100, this will secure that you are the only ones on the tour vehicle, 8 person minimum).

Crack O'Dawn Tour

Recommended for all ages, this tour takes you on our Scenic Wildlife Drive. This is a perfect opportunity to get to know most of our animals and the stories surrounding both them and Fossil Rim. This tour lasts around two hours depending on weather, traffic in the park and if the animals decide they are especially hungry that day. Guests are encouraged to check in for the tour at 7:30 a.m. It starts at 8 a.m. sharp and the tour vehicle won’t be able to wait for late arrivals.
***The difference between the Crack O’Dawn Tour and Safari Tour is the lower cost and earlier start of the Crack O’Dawn version.

Times: 8 a.m. daily throughout Spring Break (March 4-19) and then weekends only from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Behind-the-Scenes Tour

This tour not only takes you on the Scenic Wildlife Drive through our park, it also provides you a special privilege to view the animals in our Intensive Management Area (IMA). With this area being off limits to drive-through guests, you will get the special behind-the-scenes look that most people want. This three-hour tour is designed for older children (ages 7 and older) and adults, as the length and delivery style make it unsuitable for young children.

Times:  9 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily during September–May / 9 a.m. daily during June–August

Price: $53.95 per person

Discovery After Dark Program and Tour

Ever wonder what animals do after the sun sets? This tour allows you to spot our animals during their nighttime behavior, as well as learn about nocturnal animals and their adaptations that allow them to function in the dark. Reservations are required at least three days in advance.
When arriving at Fossil Rim, park in the Overlook parking lot and join us in the EcoCenter for a 45-minute program. Then, we will take you on a two-hour tour through the park using spotlights to guide the way.

Times: April 7, 2017 and October 6, 2017: 6 - 9 p.m.,  / May 12, 2017, June 9, 2017, July 7, 2017, August 11, 2017 and September 8, 2017: 7 - 10 p.m.

Ride-the-Rim Tour

Our guided Ride-the-Rim Tour offers an opportunity for you to ride your mountain bike as you journey through a special restricted area of the park that houses several of our endangered species. Ride-the-Rim Tours are offered in Family, Moonlight, Beginner and Experienced ride formats.

Specialty Tours

Our Specialty Tours come in two varieties – tours you can reserve any time with advanced registration (Adventure and Feed Run), as well as event or dinner tours scheduled on our Calendar page (Photography, Mother’s/Father’s Day Sunset Safari, Sweetest Day/Sweetheart Safari, Holiday Around the Rim Sunset Safari and Murder Mystery Safari). While some of these tours may be enjoyed by families, some are for adults only or have age restrictions.

Adventure Tour

Spend a leisurely day on your own private tour to see all aspects of Fossil Rim. This tour gives you the opportunity to meet our animal care specialists, enjoy a luxurious lunch at our Safari Camp and see the “behind-the-scenes” areas of Fossil Rim. Due to the length of activities, this tour is recommended for adults only with a limit of 10 people per tour. Reservations are required at least two weeks in advance. For more than four people per tour, or if attempting to schedule tour with less than two weeks of notice, please call us to discuss.

Feed Run Tour

This tour provides you the opportunity to be an animal keeper for a morning. You’ll be able to ride along with our animal care experts as they do their morning feeding rounds. With a limit of two people per tour, it is recommended for adults only. The tour can last up to approximately 3.5 hours. ***For your protection, guests must remain in the vehicle.

Times: Year-round, Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

Animal Keeper Tour and Dinner

Join us for this exclusive experience! Ride along with our animal keeper on this behind-the-scenes tour where you’ll have a chance to view our exotic animals in their free-roaming environment. Journey into our Intensive Management Area and visit our maned wolves, Mexican gray wolves, cheetahs, red wolves, southern black rhinos and Attwater’s prairie chickens.
After your tour, enjoy a three-course dinner in our glass-walled pavilion located across from one of our main watering holes. This tour is for adults only. It starts at our Safari Camp at 3 p.m. with dinner to follow at 5:30 p.m.

Photo Tour

Photography Tour

Photography Tours come in two varieties. The first option is a publicly scheduled event with an expert instructor, which is listed on our Calendar and in our monthly newsletter as “Photography Workshop.” The second option is a “Photography Tour,” wherein you are driven around by one of our experienced guides and given the best photographic opportunities available.
The Photography Tour lasts about four hours, and is recommended for ages 16 and older. This tour is designed for photographers to catch the dusk light, which is the best light possible for afternoon photos. Please look at our Calendar for both the Photography Workshop and Photography Tour dates.

Mother’s/Father’s Day Sunset Safari Dinner and Tour

Show mom or dad how much she or he means to you by sharing an evening at Fossil Rim. You will start with a delicious dinner including tea, coffee and a homemade dessert in the glass-walled pavilion located at the Foothills Safari Camp overlooking a watering hole in our Main Pasture. After dinner, you will board one of our open-air vehicles to experience a sunset tour of Fossil Rim. A special gift for mom or dad is also included.

Sweetheart Safari

Sweetest Day/Sweetheart Safari Dinner and Tour

Are you sweet on someone? Impress them with a three-course meal, live music and an evening tour. You and your sweetheart will arrive at the Foothills Safari Camp at 6 p.m. in one of our open-air vehicles. There, the two of you will partake in a delicious “surf and turf” candlelight dinner with tea, coffee and a homemade dessert, plus chocolate for your sweetheart. It is all served in our glass-walled pavilion overlooking one of the watering holes of our Main Pasture. During dinner, relax with your special someone and enjoy our live performer singing love songs before you set out for the after-dark tour.

Holiday Around the Rim Sunset Safari Dinner and Tour

Come celebrate Christmas at Fossil Rim! Close out the year with our Holiday Around the Rim Sunset Safari Dinner and Tour. This celebratory tour involves cookies, hot chocolate, appetizers, shopping, exotic animals and then the holiday meal. Meet at the Foothills Safari Camp pavilion at 5 p.m. and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate.
Then, board one of our open-air vehicles at 5:30 p.m. and travel through the Scenic Wildlife Drive to the Nature Store for holiday shopping and appetizers. At 6:30 p.m., hop back in the open-air vehicle for a brisk evening safari to the glass-walled pavilion at the Foothills Safari Camp, where you will enjoy holiday dinner, tea, coffee and a homemade dessert in front of the glowing fireplace.

Large Group Tours

The more, the merrier.

We have Group Tours designed for large school, youth, and senior groups, and Private Step-On Tours for groups with their own bus and driver. Weekdays only. Due to the number of guests, traffic and predicted drive through times during the Spring Break holiday (March 4, 2017 – March 19, 2017) we do not accept school or large groups during this time.
(Reservations are required at least three days in advance).

Group Tour

These tours are designed for school, youth and senior special groups. We will put the group on one or more of our tour vehicles and provide a guided tour through our Scenic Wildlife Drive. Guests can ask all the questions they like to make sure they don’t miss a thing. Groups must have between 10-104 people. For more than 28 guests, please call us to check availability. For school groups, one teacher/chaperone will be admitted free for every 12 children. Parents in attendance pay full admission price.

Times: 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m.

Private Step-On Tour

Do you have a group of people, plus your own bus and driver? We can provide a tour guide who will hop onto your group’s vehicle and present all the information you seek about Fossil Rim and its animals. This tour will take you on our Scenic Wildlife Drive and lasts about 2-3 hours depending on traffic and time spent at the halfway point. Food for the animals is not included in the price.

Self-Guided Group Tour

This tour is for school groups using their own transportation that do not need a step-on guide. The group must have between 10-104 people, and for school groups there will be one teacher/chaperone admitted free for every 12 children. Food for the animals is not included in the price. Parents in attendance will pay full admission price.

General Tour Information

  • You need to be prepared. Be sure to dress for the weather. You may bring hats, sunscreen and water.
  • Please do not bring pets, additional guests without prior reservation, weapons, alcohol, tobacco, firearms, illegal drugs, radios, fireworks or food. Only animal food provided by Fossil Rim is allowed on tour vehicles.
  • There are no restrooms on our tour vehicles. Restrooms are located at the Front Gate and Overlook.
  • Guests meet at the Overlook and will need to be there 15 minutes prior to tour time so that bathroom breaks and payments (if necessary) can be finished before tour time.
  • Tours include only the Scenic Wildlife Drive areas unless indicated otherwise.

  • Guests must cancel at least 48 hours in advance to avoid penalty.
  • Payment is due at time of booking, unless special arrangements are made. For example, an exception may be made when schools, churches or other entities are booking tours using an organizational check or card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and debit cards.
  • Inclement weather policy: all tours will proceed as scheduled. Should Fossil Rim Wildlife Center need to cancel for safety or other reasons, a full refund will be given.
  • Cost of tour includes drive-through admission to the park.
